There have been numerous changes over the past few months to the Dynamics NAV, with Microsoft implementing three cumulative updates to the business management solution. One of these changes being the name…
Previously known as the Dynamics NAV, the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central still upholds to the standards and performance that our partners and customers are accustomed to at Synergy Technology.
Other updates included have raised questions of concern regarding the licensing and whether the same license for the Dynamics NAV can be used for the Dynamics 365 Business Central. But here at Synergy Technology, we want there to be clarity for all our customers in understanding the newest updates.
Dynamics 365 Business Central License Types
From April 1st, 2019, Microsoft will no longer be selling older versions of the Dynamics NAV to new customers taken on board. Alongside this, if you are a customer who is using an older version than the Dynamics NAV 2009, then you will only be able to upgrade your licence to Business Central. Furthermore, the NAV 2018 license is no longer capable of being used in the Dynamics 365 Business Central and vice versa.
Despite these changes, you still have the option to choose between perpetual licensing and subscription licensing. If you are unfamiliar to these, you should know that:
- Perpetual licensing means you paying up-front and having permanent usage rights whereas
- Subscription licensing, secured with periodic payments, allowing you to use the software during a certain time.
However, the Dynamics 365 Business Central offers named user licenses instead of the above coinciding licensing options on the Dynamics NAV.
A named user license indicates that each user requires a separate user license and that these licenses cannot be shared, but an individual with a named user license can access the service through multiple devices.
Dynamics 365 Business Central User Types
The three main user types of the Dynamics 365 Business Central license include:
- Essential
- Premium
- Team Members
Even though Essential and Premium type users are extremely like Full users, Essential users do not have the possibility to use the service management and manufacturing functionality. Moreover, Essential and Premium users cannot be mixed and matched at an organisational level.
To replace the Dynamics NAV Limited User license, the Business Central upgrade has introduced a Team Members licence. Team Members have access to any instance of Dynamics 365 if it is within the same tenancy.
