With the release of Business Central 2025 Wave 2, Microsoft has officially introduced Agents within the system, marking a significant focus area for this update. This exciting enhancement demonstrates Microsoft’s continued investment in leveraging artificial intelligence to streamline business processes and improve operational efficiency.
But what exactly are Agents?
Agents represent the next evolution of Business Central’s AI capabilities, building upon existing features such as Copilot chat, automated bank reconciliation, and item marketing text generation. Their primary function is to carry out repetitive and routine tasks in the background, allowing your employees to stay informed about important actions without being bogged down by manual work. This ultimately frees up valuable time for your team to concentrate on more complex and strategic aspects of their roles.
In this Wave 2 release, Business Central introduces two key Agent types: the Sales Agent (which was previously available in preview) and the new Purchasing Agent.
Sales Agent Features
The Sales Agent is designed to support and optimise sales operations by automating several key tasks, including:
- Automatically monitoring incoming emails related to sales
- Drafting responses to customers regarding orders and item availability
- Generating sales documents without manual intervention
- Implementing requested changes to sales documents automatically
These capabilities not only accelerate the sales process but also reduce the risk of human error. For comprehensive details on the Sales Agent, Microsoft provides documentation here:

Purchasing Agent Features
The Purchasing Agent similarly takes on routine procurement activities, helping to:
- Create draft purchase documents quickly and efficiently
- Process invoices through electronic documents such as PDFs
- Read and retrieve attachments from emails relevant to purchasing
These features substantially reduce the manual workload for purchasing teams and enhance the accuracy and speed of procurement workflows. The capabilities of both Sales and Purchasing Agents are set to expand further in future releases, offering even more support for business automation.
Availability and Usage of Agents
Can you start using Agents immediately? The answer is both yes and no.
Agents are available for use now, but they do require some initial setup and configuration to tailor their use according to your specific business needs and processes. Furthermore, with the Wave 2 release, additional functionalities and localisation support will be gradually rolled out, allowing more organisations worldwide to benefit from these tools.
It’s important to note that, unlike other Business Central Copilot AI features that are included with your subscription, Agents come with an additional charge. Their licensing is based on a consumption model, billed per use, with two flexible payment options available:
- Pre-paid in advance, allowing you to purchase a set amount of usage upfront
- Pay-As-You-Go, charging only for what you consume beyond any pre-paid allocation
Significantly, both these models can be used simultaneously. So, if your pre-paid usage runs out, the system seamlessly switches to Pay-As-You-Go, ensuring uninterrupted access to Agent functionality. More detailed information on Copilot pricing and licensing can be found here:

Is It Worth Implementing Agents Now?
While Agents are still in their early stages of deployment, there is no doubt they hold substantial promise in transforming how Business Central users manage their daily workflows. Whether you choose to adopt them now or wait until further enhancements are released, Agents undoubtedly belong as a key component within the broader Business Central ecosystem and business process automation landscape.
By offloading mundane and repetitive order processing tasks to Agents, businesses can minimise user errors and enhance overall productivity. This allows staff members to focus on higher-value activities that drive business growth and customer satisfaction, a clear win for any organisation looking to optimise their enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.
