We often get asked what the differences between Dynamics Hive, and full Dynamics 365 Sales / CRM are, so hopefully this blog post will help to answer some of those questions.
Dynamics Hive CRM is a Synergy Technology solution that is built on the Microsoft Dynamics 365 platform, specifically Dynamics 365 Sales and Power Platform technology. We are a Microsoft Solutions Partner for Business Applications, as well as a certified Small and Midsize Business Management Specialist, and because of this we have extensive experience in developing for the platform. Microsoft provides the underlying platform, security, and roadmap, but Hive itself is designed, packaged, and supported by Synergy Technology.
How Dynamics Hive Differs from Dynamics CRM / Dynamics 365 Sales
1. Positioning and Intent
Dynamics 365 Sales (formerly Dynamics CRM) is Microsoft’s full enterprise CRM. It is designed to cover a very wide range of sales scenarios across organisations of all sizes, including complex processes, deep customisation, and advanced features.
Dynamics Hive is a simplified, pre-configured CRM designed specifically for SMEs who want the benefits of Dynamics without the cost and complexity of a full deployment.
2. Feature Scope
Dynamics 365 Sales includes:
- Extensive customisation and configuration options
- Advanced sales features aimed at larger or more complex organisations
- A broad licensing model that often requires add-ons
Dynamics Hive includes:
Core CRM functionality only
- Leads
- Accounts
- Contacts
- Opportunities
- Activities
- Dashboards
- Projects and marketing lists
Enterprise-level features that most SMEs rarely use are intentionally excluded. This makes Hive easier to adopt, quicker to implement, and easier to run day-to-day.
3. Cost and Licensing
This is one of the biggest differences.
Dynamics 365 Sales uses Microsoft’s standard licensing, which can become expensive as teams grow or require additional modules.
Dynamics Hive uses a different, more cost-effective licensing approach, allowing businesses to roll CRM out to their whole sales team at a much lower cost than full Dynamics 365 Sales.
Hive is designed to remove the “enterprise price tag” barrier that often stops SMEs adopting CRM properly.
4. Implementation and Time to Value
Dynamics 365 Sales:
- Often involves longer discovery, configuration, and deployment phases
- Can feel like overkill for smaller teams
Dynamics Hive:
- Pre-scoped and pre-configured based on Synergy’s experience with UK SMEs
- Much faster to implement
- Less consultancy required
- Users can start working almost immediately
5. Microsoft Platform Benefits Are Still There
Even though Hive is simplified, it still runs on the Microsoft Dynamics platform, which means:
- Same security and data model as Dynamics 365
- Native integration with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams, SharePoint)
- Strong integration with Dynamics 365 Business Central
- A future-proof path to full Dynamics 365 Sales if the business outgrows Hive
This is an important distinction. Hive is not a separate or proprietary system that locks customers in.
6. Designed to Work Alongside Business Central
Dynamics Hive is designed specifically to integrate with Dynamics 365 Business Central, using Synergy Technology’s unique integration called Harmoniser. This gives sales teams clear visibility of pipeline, activities and upcoming opportunities, while finance and operations remain firmly managed in Business Central. This helps reduce duplication, improves forecasting, and creates a shared view of customers across sales and finance.
Dynamics 365 Sales can also integrate with Business Central, but it is a broader, standalone CRM designed to support a wide range of sales scenarios, often requiring more configuration to align sales processes closely with finance and operations. It would usually use the stock Microsoft integration, which is has a reputation for being difficult to set up, configure and manage.
